For our breeding stock, we’ve chosen breeds that we like and enjoy raising. Since we’re raising food to provide for our own families, we’ve mainly focused on breeds that have good utility value, particularly true dual-purpose breeds. Hopefully, you will like these breeds, too, and so we can help you make a good start toward establishing or adding to your flock.
Chicken breeds that we currently raise on our farm or obtain from local area breeders include: Delawares, Barred Rocks, New Hampshires, Black Australorps, Welsummers, Rhode Island Reds and Buff Orpingtons.
In addition, we raise and sell juvenile pullets (female chickens) from chicks purchased from other well-known hatcheries.
We raise several turkey breeds and currently offer Beltsville White and Heritage Bronze turkeys for sale.
Additional Breeds of Poultry
Though we don’t have any immediate plans to add more breeds to our farm, we hope that others in our community and neighboring regions will begin to raise selectively-bred flocks as well, and we actively seek to encourage and support such relationships and endeavors.
If you are interested in a breed that we do not currently carry, please contact us. We have connections with many other breeders, and so we can hopefully assist you in finding the breed you love and wish to raise.
Naturally Mating and Naturally Reproducing
All of our breeds of chickens and turkeys are able to mate and reproduce naturally. This means that with sufficient knowledge and skills, you can start and maintain your own breeding flocks. This allows you to raise your own replacement birds without needing to continually buy chicks every few years. We are developing classes to offer through The Ploughshare Institute for Sustainable Culture on how to do this.
