Upcoming Hatches
We have two more hatches planned for 2016:
- October 3rd
- October 31st
We’ll have a limited supply of the following breeds.
- Barred Plymouth Rocks
- Black Australorps
- Delawares
- Mottled Javas
- Red Dorking
- Welsummers
We’ll be hatching to order, so please order as soon as possible to ensure that you get the best selection — we’ll fill orders in the order that we receive them.
We will not be sexing any of the breeds for the last two hatches, so all birds will be straight run.
Breeders and Juvenile Birds Available
We are going to discontinue both our Mottled Javas and our Dark Cornish.
We have both adult breeders and juvenile birds available. If you are interested, please call us at: 254-829-5333.
Should I start chicks in the fall?
With most chick sales taking place in the spring, you may wonder “Is fall a good time to start chicks?”
I think it is, for several reasons:
Fall-hatched chicks will start laying next spring. If your chicks were hatched the first week of October, they’ll be 28 weeks old mid-April. This is a great time to start getting eggs, since their peak egg production will coincide with with those months (at least in Texas) when you’re getting lots of produce from your vegetable garden. They’ll be at their prime laying age right through the hotter months.
In the spring, the daylight hours will still be increasing at the time when your birds are starting to lay. (Daylight hours increase from the shortest day, on December 21 to the longest day on June 21). The natural urge of the birds to lay combined with the lengthening of daylight hours can encourage them to become hardy layers.
Delawares
Although I enjoy raising many different breeds of chicken, I have to say that Delawares are my favorite. The reason is that they are such great meat producers and good egg layers. Besides that, they’re calm, inquisitive, and good foragers — they’re really a good all-around bird.
